The circular economy future is going to be compelling. A world where there is no waste. Only food. Waste of one industry is feedstock for another. There are hundreds of small companies operating in precisely this principle.
However, such companies or Zeronauts, as John Elkington may call them can only future proof their existence if they also have a level playing field.
My name is Pankaj Arora. I started My Circular Business out of the need to showcase the circular economy in action.
A lot is being said and written about the subject, but not much is being done to provide small start-ups a platform for circular model companies to sell their wares that actually make them profitable.
They are left out in the market to compete with bigger, linear business model companies. This is not right.
In short, give such companies wings to achieve a level playing field by bringing together like-minded companies and people behind those companies.
I have written for years on my blog 'Linking Sustainability' and have always found that the mainstream larger companies are the ones pushing towards sustainability and circular economy. They are the ones always present in sustainability conferences. While it is good that these big companies lead the field, but it is seen that most of the time, sustainability is done as another way to be seen green.
I believe true innovation trickles from bottom up - when small start-ups like EcoAlf in Spain, Rype Office and RiverSimple in the UK begin to create true sustainable products and more importantly profitable businesses, only then will innovation will reach the masses and the demand be created.
Else, it just gets relegated to a particular market segment.
Companies like Patagonia and Interface have proven that creating a circular world is possible along with making money.
The eternal battle between values and commercialization is always a hard one to win. Commercialization and scaling do not have to come at the expense of the values and environment.
